Internal re-modelling and refurbishment of a converted Victorian warehouse in Bow.
The client converted this warehouse into a home and artist studio over a decade ago, and in that time their family and the practice both expanded, with the studio relocating and leaving a large under-utilised space at ground floor. The building needed a re-think, and improvements to the entire layout were essential. This included adding a more formal entrance, moving the kitchen and dining area downstairs, adding a library/study upstairs and expanding the living area, as well as refurbishing three bathrooms, adding storage and generally improving the interior with an integrated thoughtful architectural scheme.
We collaborated and worked closely with the artist client to develop the palette, which is an echo of their multidisciplinary work, often using vibrant colours, rich textures and symbols. The design evolved out of this dialogue, layering several narratives and exploring a mutual fascination with composition, form and colour theory. The space is joyful, playful and sophisticated – balanced with the needs of a family and busy household.
Works were carried out in phases over a 1 year period, starting with the bathrooms and kitchen in Summer 2023, then entrance, library and joinery in Summer 2024.
