The client wanted to expand the kitchen and dining area and improve the house for their growing family. They wanted more of a separation between living and sleeping quarters.
To create a sense of openness and flow at the ground floor we focused on opening the entrance and front of the property onto the garden and back of the property, giving the entire ground floor over to living and moving all bedrooms upstairs. The kitchen and dining, where the family spend most of their time, sits at the heart of the house. We extended this space into the side courtyard and opened the rear facade up with large bi-folding doors to take full advantage of the south facing garden.
To one side of the extension an exposed brick wall ties the new extension in with the existing by using the same London Stock brick. This acts as a warm and textured counterpoint to an otherwise simple space, which is as open as possible with roof lights to admit more light deep into the plan. Hidden cupboards conceal a laundry and pantry and the new WC is also tucked under the stair, opening up to reveal a shower as well.
